{"id":93,"date":"2008-09-07T06:36:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-07T11:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogue.uqam.ca\/consumption\/consumption-and-technology\/"},"modified":"2008-09-07T06:36:00","modified_gmt":"2008-09-07T11:36:00","slug":"consumption-and-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogue.uqam.ca\/consumption\/2008\/09\/07\/consumption-and-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Consumption and technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"artcopy\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">My next book, <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">whose publishing (in French at first) is planned for winter of 2009<span class=\"artcopy\">, will focus <\/span>on consumption and technology<span class=\"artcopy\">; <\/span>here\u2019s a glimpse of its content<span class=\"artcopy\">.<\/span><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"artcopy\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">In our hyperconsumption society, technological development is essentially dictated by commercial considerations, the first of which being the necessity for manufacturers to differentiate their products from their competitors\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"artcopy\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">The iPhone, launched in Canada in July 2008, <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">is a fitting example of this assertion. Far be it from me to denigrate this gadget which obviously appeals to a very specific market segment; otherwise, how can one explain the endless launch day queues in front of stores for the privilege of being among the first to own this marvel? Its design undoubtedly meets <i>aesthetic <a href=\"http:\/\/benoit-consumption.blogspot.com\/2007\/09\/expects-revisited.html\">expects<\/a><\/i> and its many functions, too numerous in fact for the average user, allow its users to justify their purchase from a utilitarian standpoint (<a href=\"http:\/\/benoit-consumption.blogspot.com\/2007\/03\/functional-expects.html\"><i>functional expects<\/i><\/a>). <span class=\"artcopy\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"artcopy\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">The iPhone\u2019s appeal lies elsewhere. It has to do with the image, the myth I should say, Apple built around its latest creation, as it did for other products, the iPod for instance; <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">as the latter, the iPhone is a cult object, a status symbol (<a href=\"http:\/\/benoit-consumption.blogspot.com\/2007\/03\/symbolic-expects.html\"><i>symbolic expects<\/i><\/a>), yet even, for some people, a possession which allows them to enhance a somewhat weak self-esteem (<a href=\"http:\/\/benoit-consumption.blogspot.com\/2007\/03\/aspirational-expects.html\"><i>aspirational expects<\/i><\/a>). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Despite the fact that competing products, such as the Touch Diamond (HTC) and the Instinct (Samsung), offer very similar designs, features and functionalities, the iPhone\u2019s exclusive image allows Apple to sell it at a price slightly higher than competing products\u2019, because the unconditional, the true <i>aficionados<\/i>, are less sensitive to price, as long as said price remains within a range whose boundaries Apple has undoubtedly pinpointed (<a href=\"http:\/\/benoit-consumption.blogspot.com\/2007\/04\/financial-expects.html\">financial expects<\/a>).
